Network Resources

Each account holder is provided with access to a suite of services and resources that are available to him/her on the network. The normal services provided to each category of user are as follows:

Faculty and Staff

  • Personal network space for data storage and personal website [total disk space allocation 10 gigabytes]
  • Access to networked software, e.g. Microsoft Office
  • Networked print services
  • Access to temp disk for temporary storage and moving of large files
  • Personal e-mail account

Students

  • Personal network space for data storage and personal website [total disk space allocation 10 gigabytes]
  • Access to networked software, e.g. Microsoft Office
  • Networked print services
  • Access to temp disk for temporary storage and moving of large files
  • Personal e-mail account

Bandwidth Management

The campus network, including the connection to the Internet, is a critical shared resource for supporting academic programs. Use of the Internet connection that are central to the academic/administrative mission of the college (e.g. access to Pomona web, e-mail, and core network services) will receive highest priority. Bandwidth limits are in place in order to provide the campus community with appropriate network response times, thus protecting all users from excessive bandwidth usage by anyone individual.

Excessive bandwidth usage shall be defined as network activity that causes a major disruption in network services and/or when usage is in excess of 2 gigabits of outbound traffic per day for three consecutive days.

The college will take action against those who have exceeded the bandwidth stated above.

Wifi vs. Ethernet Speeds

Depending on one’s location on campus and the devices being sued, one will see various connection speeds.

ITS encourages the use of ethernet (wire connection) in addition to using the wifi. On average, one can see wireless speeds anywhere from 18mbps up/down to 90mbps. Again, this depends on the device and location on campus in relation to an adjacent wireless access point.

Per ethernet, one can expect anywhere from 500mbps to 700mbps Upload/Download (the campus has fiber optic connections going to most buildings).

Personally Owned Computers

Normally the on-campus connection of personally owned computers to the campus network shall be restricted to student owned computers.

Internet addresses are provided dynamically through a Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) system. All personally owned computers connected to the campus network are required to be registered with ITS. This process is handled automatically via software that requires registration before access is granted to any network resources. In order to obtain a static Internet (TCP/IP) computer address the owner of the system in addition to registering his/her computer, must submit a specific request to ITS Network Services for a static address.

The rules and regulations contained in the College’s policies pertaining to electronic mail and Internet access are equally applicable to the use of personal machines for file sharing or as servers. If bandwidth or other problems occur, ITS reserves the right to discontinue access to the machine. Computers connected to the network may not be used as servers for private enterprises, commercial activity, or personal profit. Computers connected to the network may not be used to provide access to the Internet for anyone not formally affiliated with the College. If personal computers on the Pomona network are used as servers, the administrator has the additional responsibility to respond to any use of the server that is in violation of these policies and procedures. Server administrators must take steps to prevent recurrence of such violations and report these violations to the ITS Service Desk.

ITS reserves the right to disconnect any network port whose activity causes an adverse effect on the network or on any other user. Network connections may also be revoked in the case of malicious or inappropriate computing activity on the network.

ITS reserves the right to restrict access to the network during diagnostic and/or maintenance services. Every effort will be made to provide advance notification, and scheduling of such activities will be done during times of minimum impact and traffic.

Registration of Devices Connected to the Pomona Campus Network

All personally owned devices connected to the campus network will be required to register with ITS in order to provide the Network Administrator with the information necessary to contact individual users in the event that his/her computer is causing a network problem. Registration will be handled automatically at the time a computer is connected to the campus network. All network services and resources will be unavailable until the device is registered. The registration process will be required at the start of each academic year and whenever a device is moved to a new location on the network.

Virus Protection

É«ÖÐÉ« requires all computers to have up-to-date antivirus software before they can be used on the É«ÖÐÉ« residential network.

Other supported antivirus software may be substituted provided, but all antivirus software must be kept up-to-date. Failure to do so may result in loss of connectivity to the É«ÖÐÉ« network.

Network Connections

Residence Halls

Residence hall connections are intended to provide students with access to the campus data network. Normally, one data network connection is provided for each student. Network connections, wiring, equipment, or jacks may not be altered or extended beyond the location of their intended use. Any costs incurred to repair damages to a network jack in a residence hall room will be divided equally, and billed to the students residing in that room. Network standards are updated annually. Students must provide their own computers, software, and Ethernet cards that meet Pomona’s . Please contact ITS for the most current information.

Departments, Offices, Classrooms and Labs

All offices, laboratories, and classrooms on campus are wired for access to the network. If departments request additional network jacks, or if network connections need to be moved to different locations, the department should request this service through ITS. The department will be billed for charges resulting from moves, additions, and changes.

Network connections, wiring, equipment, or jacks may not be altered or extended beyond the location of their intended use. Any costs incurred to repair damages to a network or cable television jack in a department will be billed to that department.

Wireless Network Access

In several buildings and dorms across campus, ITS has implemented wireless access to the campus network. Consult the  for more information.
