If you have any concerns about whether the internship you want is related to your major, consult with your academic advisor or the International Student Advisor (ISA, Kathy Quispe) at any step during the following procedure.

  1. Download required form(s) according to the chart
  2. Confirm your eligibility for CPT by requesting a signature from International Student Advisor on the CPT Request Form
  3. If you are eligible, meet with an academic advisor in your major to discuss ideas about internships of interest, so you do not risk not getting approved for a job offer. Respect the academic/intellectual authority of faculty.
  4. Look for an internship 鈥 Use the resources provided by the Career Development Office
  5. When offered a job, get a written offer letter (can be by email) from the proposed employer/sponsor. An offer letter is required for all CPT鈥檚.
  6. Complete your Learning Agreement if the internship comes under the 鈥渞egular/elective鈥 category. Present completed form to your prospective employer/sponsor to review your goals and expectations. To comply with regulatory requirements, it is important that your employer agree to provide supervision, mentoring and support in accordance with this learning Agreement 鈥 see Employer/Sponsor section at bottom of page. Using email to send and receive concurrence is acceptable.
  7. Email offer letter, CPT request form, and Learning Agreement forms to the following individuals or offices in this order:
  8. Academic advisor for review and recommendation.
  9. Career Development Office (CDO) for review and approval of transcript notation.
  10. Registrar鈥檚 office for transcript notation.
  11. Once you have collected all three signatures on page 2 of the CPT Request form, email all forms to your ISA (Kathy Quispe). If the ISA concurs that the internship is appropriate and that the documentation is complete, the ISA will authorize the internship.

Details will be entered into SEVIS and a new I-20 with authorization noted on page 2 will be printed.
  12. *Complete the internship as authorized.
(If this is a regular elective internship (not PCIP or required internship), write a Reflection paper following guidelines on the CPT Completion form. Email it to your academic advisor for review.)

*If you stop working for any reason before the agreed end date, notify the ISA, the registrar, and your faculty advisor immediately.
