PAYS 2018 6

PAYS Alum, Cesar Herrera, led an elective course for a PAYS Summer.

Through close mentoring and a targeted curriculum, the residential summer program helps students develop critical analytical, writing, and problem-solving skills.  At the end of each summer session, students complete an evaluative survey on their perceptions of program benefits and changes in attitudes toward attending a four-year college.

Survey results suggest that more than 90 percent of program participants see improvements in solving word problems, writing skills and critical thinking skills.  PAYS participants report increased classroom participation, which suggests increased confidence in formulating and expressing ideas, an important skill for college admissions and success.  Prior to their PAYS experience, many PAYS scholars describe a lack of awareness of The Claremont Colleges specifically and of private liberal arts education generally.  As a result of their PAYS experience, over 70 percent of participants have reported an interest in attending a private liberal arts college.  PAYS students also report feeling far better informed about college access, college choices, and sources of financial aid available to them.

All PAYS participants have been accepted to four year competitive institutions.  All students have been admitted to selective four year colleges and universities, and based on their career interests and other factors choose what path to take. True to its mission, PAYS is committed to supporting the entire class in achieving a baccalaureate degree.
